Teeth Fairies have arrived!

4 Feb

When they spy a wiggly tooth, they quickly fly right down

LW_TF_pages6-7_finalREV_lo-res

I’ve blogged about this before, but now I have a very cool update! My super-fun project from last year, Teeth Fairies – A Baby Teeth Tradition, is now available for purchase (at Amazon and at selected retailers)! My 6.5-yr-old daughter has two incredibly wiggly front teeth, so my copy of the very cute doll and book gift set arrived just in time. Teeth Fairies is a book and doll set that helps a child make the most of the brief, special time in life when they are losing their baby teeth. Written by the wonderful Ingrid Bencosme, former teacher and mother of 3-soon-to-be-4, the book was a joy to illustrate, and it was such fun to design the tooth fairy doll as well.

Teeth Fairies is donating a portion of sales to Communities In Schools to help prevent and fight serious dental disease that can cause kids to miss school and potentially drop out.

Here are some photos of the set, as well as a few of my favourite illustrations from the book. Check out the “Parents” section of the Teeth Fairies website for more info on the set, helpful tips and fun downloadable activities for kids, and like Teeth Fairies on Facebook for kids’ dental health tips, contests, recipes and more fun stuff.

And visit my portfolio site to see more of my illustrations, if you’re so inclined!

Springtime Weather Wonders! (and Wondering Whether It Will Ever Be Springtime)

30 Jan

CI_capstone_RAIN-owls_thumb

We got a ton of snow here yesterday and woke up to a howling, bitingly cold wind this morning. Typical for January in Canada, sure, but I really wish I could say spring was “just around the corner” and believe it! Here’s a view of my studio this morning:

So the publication of one of my latest projects, a series of 4 books called Springtime Weather Wonders for Picture Window Books (Capstone), is a nice little treat and a taste of spring! Written by Charles Ghigna (also known as Father Goose!) each book focuses on one type of spring weather (sunshine, rain, hail and wind) and how animal families in the country and city enjoy/deal with it. It was a huge project with around 70 or so illustrations in total, and I love how it turned out!

You can order the books from Amazon or directly from Capstone. And, as always, you can see more of my work on my portfolio site. Keep warm and cozy!

Teeth Fairies – A Baby Teeth Tradition

18 Nov

LW_TF_page24_final_lo-res

So this was truly a dream project… I was commissioned to illustrate a book, and design a doll and keepsake box for a complete gift set for kids at that wiggly-tooth stage of life (which my little one is smack in the middle of!)

The website, www.teethfairies.com, just launched and is loads of fun – some of my illustrations have been animated, which is a first for me! According to the site: “The classic tale of the tooth fairy gets an exciting update and modern twist and helps parents with getting kids to take care of their dental health.”

I also created fun downloadable activities and colouring sheets for the website.

The complete package with book and doll will retail for $49.99 and will be available in February 2015 at amazon.com, and available for pre-order soon!

I See Me! – My Farm Friends personalized book

18 Sep
Cluck Cluck! spread from My Farm Friends

Cluck Cluck! spread from My Farm Friends

I See Me! creates fun and fabulous kids’ books that can be customized with the child’s name and often their photo too. I was hired to create a new book set on a farm. It was so much fun! They wanted some custom typography for the animal sounds, and the various signs around the farm. The “face import” feature was a challenge – I had to allow for a photo of the child to be incorporated into the illustration so needed to make the poses and the outfits work with any gender or ethnicity or face shape that might be submitted. It was a bit of a mind-bender and thankfully I See Me! has amazing coders on staff who picked up where I left off and pulled it all together.

Shown here I’ve inserted an illustrated face, but also see below a screengrab from iseeme.com where you can see how a photo of an actual child is incorporated.

I’m super excited to order some copies for some little kiddoes I know! Oh, and there are stickers, lunchboxes, puzzles and a colouring book available, too.

Build a Book illustrations for Humpty Dumpty = Cute!

4 Dec

LW_VOC_open-book LW_VOC_page-view-1 LW_VOC_page-view-2Build a Book illustrations for Humpty Dumpty = Cute!

This was a really fun project, given that I have a very soft spot for fat cats. It’s just a cute and simple poem about a little girl’s very own cat, named John Henry. Humpty Dumpty has a fun activity for kids, they can cut out the pages and cut them up, fold and staple to make their own mini book. A quick lesson in book binding and printing forms as it’s a bit of a puzzle to make sure the pages come together in the right order.
The illustrations were fun to do as they’re simple and rely totally on the girth of the cat to give them character. Typical cat (just like mine), all he does is eat and sleep and love… and play and get exercise for 5 minutes a day!

Winter Party Illustration for Humpty Dumpty Magazine

13 Jan

Last fall, I scored a really fun assignment for Humpty Dumpty magazine – a full spread illustrating a poem about a wintry night in a big city park – where a big birthday bash is set to begin. Keeping in mind one of my favourite places in the whole world – Central Park – I had a blast doing this – playing around with the effects of streetlights making halos of light on the snow and adding the gently falling flakes. Also hiding all the objects in plain site… trying to figure what would be just challenging enough for a 5-7 year old. My 4-year-old, who’s EXTREMELY advanced (of course she is) got about half right – I figured that would work out okay. Anyhoo, it was fun to get the printed copy in the mail the other day. Have a look! Can YOU find all the hidden party paraphernalia? Good for you!humpty-print2 humpty-print1 LW_HumptyDumpty_Winter-Party_final_REV1_wtype
