New Baby Animal Illustrations for Chirp Magazine

22 Jul

ispot_Chirp_chicken_thumbEarlier this spring, I was asked by Chirp Magazine to create some cute illustrations for a spread in their “Baby Animals” issue. This was fun! There are two puzzles – one asks kids to put the life stages of frogs, butterflies and dogs in order, and one has them count the eggs in the nests of various birds. I think they turned out great!

Chirp’s colourful issues contain tons of innovative stories, puzzles and activities for 3- to 6-year-olds. As I grew up with Owl Magazine (Chirp’s older sister), it was very cool to see my illustrations in this magazine!

Springtime Weather Wonders! (and Wondering Whether It Will Ever Be Springtime)

30 Jan

CI_capstone_RAIN-owls_thumb

We got a ton of snow here yesterday and woke up to a howling, bitingly cold wind this morning. Typical for January in Canada, sure, but I really wish I could say spring was “just around the corner” and believe it! Here’s a view of my studio this morning:

So the publication of one of my latest projects, a series of 4 books called Springtime Weather Wonders for Picture Window Books (Capstone), is a nice little treat and a taste of spring! Written by Charles Ghigna (also known as Father Goose!) each book focuses on one type of spring weather (sunshine, rain, hail and wind) and how animal families in the country and city enjoy/deal with it. It was a huge project with around 70 or so illustrations in total, and I love how it turned out!

You can order the books from Amazon or directly from Capstone. And, as always, you can see more of my work on my portfolio site. Keep warm and cozy!

It’s fall… Time for yummy hot bevvies!

Warm up your belly with a yummy fall drink

Warm up your belly with a yummy fall drink

I love summer more than almost anything, so the first cool days of fall really bum me out… but then I’m won over by the pretty colour-changing leaves, cozy sweaters, crisp fresh mornings and ESPECIALLY yummy hot spicy drinks like Chai, pumpkin lattes, caramel apple cider, I could go on and on… but then I’d have to run out to Starbucks and never finish this post! Anyway, my wonderful client Caffé Demetre (a Toronto area chain of desserts-only restaurants) commissioned me to create a whole bunch of seasonal spot illustrations and a few of them were hot-bevvie focused so I thought I’d stick them together on some faux-plywood background, and use them as an excuse to create the girlie one above (to keep them company).

Caffé Demetre’s tempting autumn treats include Cider House Rules, Hot Couture and Chai Fall, but if you’re not in the Toronto area here are a few amazing-looking fall hot bevvie recipes to try at home. I’m leaning towards the Pumpkin Pie White Hot Chocolate OR the Hot Caramel Apple Cider Floats… yummmm!!

I was so bummed to hear Nate Williams was shutting down the great illustrationmundo.com! But now I see that, due to popular demand, it lives on! Hurray!!

Put your kids to work!

Little freeloaders…. I’m kidding! But Delta Faucet Company has the right idea, in the article for their online content portal “Inspired Living”. I was commissioned to create four super-helpful kid characters of varying ages, to show how kids as young as two can be real team players around the house.

Pop-ups give hints on when to start giving kids more responsibility, and how to motivate them (for fun or financial gain, as they get older).

I’m wondering if it’s time to put our 6-yr-old to work – is it too soon to have her learn to mix cocktails? As soon as she can read, I’ll give her Sally Draper’s cocktail cheat sheet, adorably illustrated by Mad Men Illustrated artist Dyna Moe.

Kanikapila!

Kanikapila!

Kanikapila!

Well, I’ve been refusing to admit it, but it looks like summer’s pretty much kaput. So, to celebrate the summer that was, here’s a little kid Kanikapila on the the beach (the word means a spontaneous Hawaiian jam session). Having never been to Hawaii, I have this romanticized idea that it’s all tiki sculptures, hangin ten, surf style, pineapple, and stuff like that. Even though I did see The Descendants, where the sky was dark and grey all the time and people seemed to have all the same problems they do here, and didn’t even stick flowers in their hair all that much.
