Fee Fi Fo Fum… I smell a new counting activity book based on a classic tale!

21 Sep

Miles Kelly, an independent kids’ book publisher in the UK, created a series of wipe-clean math activity books, based on classic fairy tales. I was happy to be selected to work on Jack and the Beanstalk! It was a super-specific brief, as each spread from one to ten had to have increasing numbers of repeated elements fit in, along with all the usual information needed to tell the story. It was a bit tricky but also fun to create the world of this grumpy giant and his bemused giantess wife.

Marvin’s Monkey Bars

LW_Chirp_marvin_happy-ending_1000

The “Everybody Bars”

Chirp, Owlkids’ magazine for 3- to 6-year-olds, commissioned me to illustrate the cute story “Marvin’s Monkey Bars” for their September issue. Marvin the monkey thinks the monkey bars should be ONLY for monkeys (i.e., himself, as he seems to be the only monkey at this school) – hence the name. But after a little solo time on “his” bars, he realizes playtime is more fun with friends, and decides to call his favourite part of the playground the “everybody bars”! An important lesson – everyone belongs – learned early on by most, but sadly not all, kids.

Snakes ‘n Vines! Fun board game art for Chirp magazine

17 Jan

lw_snakes-n-vines_1000This past November’s issue of Chirp magazine celebrated the Jungle! So they commissioned me to do a theme-appropriate twist on the board game classic snakes and ladders: Snakes ‘n Vines – climb up the vines and hope you don’t have to slither down a snake! Apparently the original snakes and ladders game came about as a way to reinforce moral teachings, originating somewhere in Northern India or Nepal. Who knew? lw_jungle-spots_1000lw_snakes-n-vines_1000lw_snakes-n-vines_printed-samplelw_snakes-n-vines_start-corner1000If you’d like to see more of my portfolio, you can see it all here! xo

It’s hard to find here in Canada. Thanks in advance!! xo

The Elephant’s Child – New book for Miles Kelly

24 Oct

This fun book I illustrated for Miles Kelly in the UK, The Elephant’s Child, by Rudyard Kipling, recently became available for purchase: Order The Elephant’s Child.

It’s a “Just So” story and tells the story of how the elephant got his super useful and stylish long trunk – previously he just had a fat little piggy nose, apparently! It was a treat to illustrate all the cute characters and the African scenery including the Great Grey Green Greasy Limpopo!
